This is a cool place for a streetcar barn. *keep in mind: cars that park in the current parking lots get heavy doses of pigeon droppings everyday.

lots of lights that should be on all night. couple different skateboarding areas spread out, not all thrown together in one park. legal graffiti walls( or ART walls if you will). bike parks, tracks, and trails. green spaces.

Look to how Shanghai and Hong Kong have handled the integration of elevated freeways, pedestrian walkways / corridors, and greenspace. Also the recently completed underside of the Port Authority Bus Terminal by Leni Schwendinger Light Projects is a good lighting solution that animates the underside of a historically sketchy bridge:

The space on either side of the overpass should be programmed to include more activity so it isn’t perceived as much as a barrier.

indoor/outdoor farmer’s markets that are open everyday year round would be a great start to attracting people and traffic to the dt area.

I’ll second what Jeff Chase said:
lots of lights that should be on all night, skateboard areas, ART walls, bike parks, tracks, and trails, green spaces.

I like the ideas of the farmers markets and the skateboard park. Not sure why we would want to have this area lit up all night. Aren’t we just asking for people to congregate in an area all night? With the troubles we have had with violence in early morning hours, I would like to see a time when the lights go out, the area would be closed. Bars close at 1:00, why wouldn’t this area?

Try to connect the riverfront to downtown better. This would have to be via the ‘Under the I-480′ area. The city has spent a lot of money to revitilize the riverfront but it is still cut off from downtown- so that people are driving to get to the pedestrian bridge! Developing the in between spaces should help and would maybe encourage some commercial diversity along the riverfront (besides Rick’s). I agree with the idea of a skate park and moving the farmer’s market (the location downtown is too crowded anyway). The dog park is another good idea. Maybe increase the frequency of bus trips or have a trolley that makes a small loop from downtown, past the bridge, to Cuming St., past the new baseball stadium, back to downtown, etc. Thanks.

Who is going to maintain the “Green areas”. Where is the money coming from? The downtown area is pretty darn green as is. lots of nice green areas to go see. i think the people who put green areas haven’t been to the downtown area.

Skate park sounds like a lawsuit, who is providing insurance, and to what extent could the city be held liable?

Connecting downtown to the waterfront area is a great idea! if we could just figure out how to move con agra… buses and public transit in the downtown area should be increased. i was talking to my wife today saying it would be nice to be able to hop on a bus and go downtown. get mike young on that.
